Crisis Ahead – Jharkhand in Turmoil

The countdown has begun. It appears that the days of the Madhu Koda government in Jharkhand are numbered. In Jharkhand, three major allies in the UPA government – the congress, the RJD and the Jharkhand mukti morcha [JMM] – are both annoyed and disgusted with the manner with which the Koda and his lieutenants are functioning. If the present political development are any indication, it will be very difficult for Mr. Madhu Koda, the independent MLA to hold on to the chief ministers chair after the November 15th statehood days celebration are over. The meeting of the UPA legislators called by the JMM supremo Mr. Shibu Soren on November 6th last must have come as a severe jolt to Mr. Koda and his well wishers. On state congress president Mr. Pradeep Balmuchus instance, the congress legislators of the state, with the exception of Mr. Thomas Hansdah stayed away from the meeting. Mr. Hansdah’s argument was that he had no such instruction from the congress high command to boycott the meeting convened by the JMM supremo.
The congress is desperate to gain some lost ground in the state. It hoped to achieve its aim through some good work via the UPA government. But the non-functioning or rather the ill functioning of the Koda government is about to shatter their dreams. So the party is desperate to steer clear of the mess the Koda government is in at present.
Needless to say that the fifteen months old Madhu Koda government has failed miserably in almost every field of administration. The local congress leaders including the central minister Mr. Subodh Kant Sahay have been regularly exhorting Mr. Madhu Koda to perform. But this government has so far never appeared to be serious in solving any of the myriads of problem that the state is facing. It is more interested in arranging statehood day celebrations and functions to honor sports person and others from time to time. Serious problems like the Naxalite issue, roads, electricity, water, education, deteriorating law and order and rampant corruption in almost each and every government department have been left almost untouched.
No wonder then that Mr. Balmuchu did not only boycott the Shibu Soren convened meeting at the chief ministers residence on November 6th, but also came down heavily on the very efficacy of convening such meetings. “There is no point in attending such meetings which are called to have dinners only”, the state congress party president observed. The participants themselves in such meetings do not seems to be very serious either about the problems which are supposed to be discussed in the meetings. In the November 6th meeting e.g. which was scheduled to be held from 7:00 PM, the convener himself arrived 45 minutes late. So was the case with several ministers too. Education minister Mr. Bandhu Tirkey beat them all by reaching the meeting place by 1 hour and 20 minutes behind the schedule!
Mr. Shibu Soren, who is perhaps, waiting for the right moment to claim the chief ministers chair has also time and again criticized the Koda government in which his own party has a big share. On November 6th itself, in a public meeting Mr. Soren blurted out, “each and every government has failed… the conditions of the roads are pathetic while the contractors are flourishing…”.
Meanwhile one of the congress legislators of the Jharkhand, Mr. Niel Tirkey who have been constantly complaining about the growing corruption among the people within the government and in the government departments, and non-functioning of the government, have urged the central leadership to withdraw support from the Koda government. The congress president Mrs. Sonia Gandhi who is said to be well aware of the poor state of affairs in Jharkhand, has agree to send a committee to assess the present position of the Jharkhand government.
The media reports that Mrs. Gandhi did not respond to Mr. Koda’s request to meet her on his recent Delhi visit on November 5-6 last. Mr. Koda, as always, wanted to have Mrs. Gandhi’s blessings on November 15, the Jharkhand statehood day, in front of the home crowd. It appears that this wish of his will perhaps remain unfulfilled. One would not be very much surprised if in the coming months Jharkhand gets a new chief minister in the form of Mr. Shibu Soren.
