Fighting Terrorism – Chance for Pakistan

Can Pakistan survive the terrorist onslaught that seems to have the nation at its mercy? The country which for decades nursed, sponsored and abetted terrorism against it’s neighbor India, now finds itself at the receiving end. A surge of attacks by the Al-Quida and other terrorist groups regularly at different places of the country bear testimony that the country is in grave trouble. Pakistan’s “pet” has over the year’s grownup to be a Frankenstein and is ready to destroy its own master.

Pak sponsored terrorist groups has already had played havoc with invaluable human lives and property in India for quite some time now. From the Punjab to the far eastern state and from Kashmir to deep inside southern India every corner every crowded place be it a place of worship, a market or a railway station, the terrorists have had made their presence felt in every corner of India. They had advanced to even the most protected areas like the parliament house. Pakistan, all the while, must have been watching all this from a distance and deriving tremendous amount of sadistic pleasure at India’s plight. Too imbibed in its “hate India campaign” Pakistan ignored behind the adage, “as you sow, so you reap”! India has suffered and is still suffering and perhaps will continue to suffer, god knows for how long, from Pakistan’s monstrous policy of pumping in terrorist across the boarder and help breed and instigate terrorist “inside India” itself.

Now it is Pakistan’s turn. The country is now a day in constant threat from Al-Qaida and other militant outfits. In recent times Pakistan hardly enjoys an incident free week when the militants do not succeed in executing some destructive plan. In India the militants even advanced up to the parliament house. In Pakistan, if not the parliament house, the terrorist has been able to attack the army outposts and V.I.P’s including General [the then] Perwej Musharraf. According to the government sources, Ms. Benazir Bhutto has also been gunned down by one of these terrorist outfits. Besides this, large area in different parts of the country are virtually under the control of Al-Qaida and other terrorist groups. Situation in Pakistan is so serious that terrorist leaders have dared to threaten the Pakistan’s army. It is also learned that fatwas against government servants almost all over the country is being issued. It is a matter of great concern for both Pakistan as well as the rest of the world. The world cannot ignore the fact that Pakistan is a nuclear-armed country. One shudders to think about the consequences if Al-Qaida, Taliban or any other extremist or religious fanatic group gets access to Pakistan’s nuclear arsenal. Although Pakistan’s president Pervez Musharraf has allayed all such fears saying that there is “zero percent chance” for such a thing to happen in Pakistan. The former Pakistani general is assured of the fact that Al-Qaida or the Taliban is not capable enough to beat the Pakistani army and unless one beats the army one cannot get access to the nuclear arsenal so goes Musharraf assessment of the situation.

But the gravity of the situation can be gauzed from the fact that president Musharraf during his recent eight-day tour of Europe sought help from the European union to fight terrorism. The world perhaps knows full well that Pakistan has never been serious in its fight against terrorism. This time when reminded Musharraf pleaded “help us instead of criticizing us”. He, however, accepted that fact that it [war on terror] was a “very very tough fight”. France on its part has assured Musharraf to provide him full support in his – Pakistan’s fight against terrorism. Musharraf on his part believes that a free fair and transparent election will bring an end to the rising militant activities in side his country. He has assured the European union that the February 18th election will be free and fair and “there is not possibility of it’s being rigged” and “who ever wins, obviously power will be handed over to them”. The European union will send a team of observers who will monitor the elections. This is a chance for Pakistan to redeem its image before the rest of the world, which is septic about Pakistan’s relationship with the terrorists and a chance to stall the onslaught of the terrorist in this region.
