A consultant is a person, who offers skills to other people. You advice people on various subjects with the help of the knowledge and expertise you have. People come to consultants for expert advice and recommendations, which can be useful to improve their businesses. They work independently and are paid on an hourly or daily basis or for a project.

Consultants usually have years of experience behind them. They offer their services to many firms / individuals; mostly on a particular field. There are consultants in different fields like medical, fashion, real estate, financial planning, branding, writing, graphic design, business management, and sales etc.

Retired people offer their services to keep busy or parents who want to be at home with young children as it offers flexible work timings. You have the freedom of choosing your own work and can refuse any project. You can schedule your work as per your wishes and take a holiday once a particular project is done. But being independent also means you will have to work alone. If you don’t have an office, you will have to ask the client to arrange for a workspace. Also you will have no regular pay, medical and other benefits that employees usually take home.

Most people get into consulting, as a career change or simply to help friends or fellow colleagues with a new business or a project. Others want to get back to their favorite subject and share their knowledge with others. Once established, you can create a name for yourself and have people pouring in for your expertise.

Hope this helps you to understand how to become a consultant.
