Counselors play an important role in the life of students and professionals. They evaluate students’ skills, interests and personalities and help them understand their career options better. Many middle-aged professionals, who want to change their line of work, take the help of counselors to help them make a choice. Counselors are employed by both public and private employment agencies. Apart from a degree, a counselor has to be sensitive and patient. Good communication and interpersonal skills with a sound ear are the key elements to become popular with your students and other professional visiting you. Remember, they are here to find solutions to their problems, hence be patient and hear them out. They can sound very confused and disillusioned; esp. if they are looking for a change from the current job. Take them through their options patiently and give them time to decide.

If you are studying to be a counselor, an undergraduate degree in psychology is an excellent choice. For graduation, take up a master’s degree counseling program accredited by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP). You may need clinical experience for your master’s degree. In addition to the degree, a course in teaching or teaching experience also helps.

Learn about the new courses and schools that are coming up. There have been some rapid developments in areas like film-making, animation, medicine etc. get brochures from different schools and colleges to understand, evaluate and compare the different courses.

You will need a counseling certificate, before you can become a counselor. Check with the local employment office for the requirements. Once you have a certificate, you can apply in the various schools and employment agencies.
