Movie direction can be a great career, where you can visualize how exactly a scene will be created and design the entire setting together with the actors expressions, costumes and the dialogues. The director has the final say on all the matters of the film.
But you also need to manage a lot of departments like finances, schedules, rehearsals, script, and music to mention a few. Here we tell you how to become a director.
Many colleges now offer filmmaking courses. A lot of them offer hands-on experience in the various technical departments of filmmaking like camera, editing etc. You will also learn script writing and budgeting here. After a course, take an internship at a production house or a television station to see how the action really happens. For this you may have to move to Los Angeles or New York, where all the filmmaking action takes place. Be alert and smart and get to know how the industry works and try to make some contacts.
Keep experimenting with your handycam and try and re-do what you see at work or in movies. Direct your friends / actors and see if you are able to communicate and get the desired emotion / acting from them. Filmmaking is an elaborate skill, which requires a lot of hard work. You can also enroll in a training program for assistant directors, by the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers and the Directors Guild of America for some extra experience and technical and management know-how.
You could take up a job as an assistant director or make your own start. To turn director, get your script and most importantly funds ready. Do all the background research needed for the film. In the digital world, today, equipments and technology is easy to handle. New directors usually participate in film festivals and get noticed. Good luck!
