So you wanna be the next J.K Rowling or Jeffery Archer? Well, we tell you how to get there. Let’s see how to become a writer.
Writing is an art or a hobby, depending on how you see it. Today there are a lot of opportunities for writers, especially on the Internet. Content writing for websites is in great demand. Also you may get projects like drafting press releases, re-writing feeds from other people etc. If you have a flare for creative writing, can play with words and have a know-how of advertising; you can try copywriting too, which is a highly creative and demanding job, as you need to cook up creative new ideas all the time.
And remember not all forms of writing pay handsomely; but with a few bylines to yourself, you can create a portfolio for yourself, which can see you at great heights.
Don’t jump on a novel at the start. Dabble in different forms of writing to understand what kind of writing you can take up. Start writing on any topic that comes to your mind. Keep a diary and make entries on a daily basis, taking care of the language and grammar.
Try to keep a writing pad with you always to jot down new ideas as and when they strike you. Most importantly, read a lot of books. From blockbusters to autobiographies, classics and books by new authors; make reading a daily habit. Try to find out how the new authors are different from the older ones. Keep a set of favorite books and study why that particular writing impressed you. Join a writer’s group; it’ll help you write and discuss with other writers.
Lastly don’t give up. You first article or story may not see the ink but continue writing. Take a break if hit by the writer’s block. A day away from your desk will give you back your words. Happy writing!
