It is very easy to cook asparagus. But why do we have to eat this innocuous looking herb called asparagus. The reasons are many, firstly asparagus is nutrient rich. Asparagus contains antioxidants, vitamins and anti carcinogen agents. Secondly it is so easy to cook; you can eat it anytime you feel hungry. Thirdly, it is almost zero in unwanted calories you can even snack on it during midnight. Asparagus come in three varieties based on color. They are green, purple or white. Of these 3, green asparagus is preferred by most. Let us now see different ways to cook asparagus.
Selecting asparagus to cook is very important. Asparagus gets spoiled very easily and hence it is very important to select fresh asparagus stalks or ones that have been refrigerated or kept on ice. Even if the picked asparagus is fresh, it has to be eaten within a day or two, as the chances of the asparagus getting spoiled is high. Wash the asparagus after cutting away the hard ends. Bind both ends of the asparagus. In a large, boil water and add salt in it. Immerse the asparagus completely in it and ensure that the ends of the asparagus do not stick out of the water. Vary the temperature of the water by closing the fire and allowing the asparagus to cool down and by switching on the fire again and bringing the water to a boil. This should be done a few times till the asparagus is completely done. Test if it is done by driving a knife through the center to check if it is soft in the middle.
Perhaps the simplest way of cooking asparagus is just by boiling it in water, adding just a little salt to it. Asparagus tastes great if a little butter or any sauce is added to it. Asparagus can be eaten as a whole dish in itself as an evening snack or as an accompaniment to dinner. This wonderful herb/vegetable is a super nutritious dish that is as easy to cook as making a cup of coffee.
