How to Draw a Dog

Firstly, to capture the essence of a dog on paper accurately, you must examine carefully the dog you would like to draw. It is best to observe a picture as a reference or subject rather than the actual dog as it is considerably difficult for a dog to sit in one position long enough for someone to draw him/her.
Then draw a rectangle large enough to encompass the body of the dog on the paper. This must be done lightly with the pencil as such reference lines will be erased when doing the final touches of the drawing. Then draw a diagonal line from the upper right corner of the rectangle. Make this line approximately forty-five degrees from the top line of the rectangle. This line must then be used as the base for another rectangle to be drawn, which will be the head of the dog.
Then go back to the first rectangle, which was initially drawn and draw two long rectangular-shaped blocks at both ends and corners. These will be the legs of the dog.
From this point, you can begin drawing in the details of the dog. First, you can work on the head of the dog, which as previously mentioned will warrant the use of the second rectangle drawn. You can divide this rectangle into two parts and use the upper part to draw in the details of the dog’s ears. Then you can add the eyes, nose, mouth and chin region. Pay keen attention to details such as whiskers, and the shade of the nose. Since the nose is generally dark, slant the pencil and apply more pressure to create the darker effect. Observe the shadowed areas on the face of the dog and slant the pencil to shade in such areas. For darker areas apply more pressure to the pencil and for lighter areas apply less pressure. For the lightest areas, leave blank so as to create what appears to be an area on the dog where light hits it directly.
When the head is complete, you connect the head with the larger rectangle drawn earlier, which is the neck of the dog. Ensure that you draw in the curves of the body for a realistic look. Draw a tail at the end of the body and draw in the details of the feet and the body. Again, shade in the dark and light areas and add details such as spiky hair, or a collar, etc. And finally, erase all reference lines used and there you have completed the drawing of a dog.
