IIT Kharagpur – Indias First High Class Technical Institute

The Indian institute of technology in Kharagpur, eastern India is the first technical institute at this level set up by the government of free India. Post independence, the Indian government wanted to set up colleges where high technical education were imparted and in which students will be exposed to the highest standards of exposure and expertise in technical education. To keep with the requirement of a modern free India’s industrial requirements, the government decided to set a series of such technical institutions where the standard of education and training would be on par with international ones. With this aim, the first Indian Institute of Technology of free India was born on the month of May 1950 in Hijli, Kharagpur, West Bengal.


Situated around 120 kilometers away from Kolkata, Kharagpur is well connected by road and rail. The institute itself is just 5 kilometers from the Kharagpur railway station. Some of the courses offered in the institute are Agricultural & Food Engineering, Architecture & Regional Planning, Biotechnology, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Civil Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Computer Science & Engineering, Cryogenic Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Electronics & Electrical Communication Engineering. The list is endless with many more courses offered taught here by the best of the faculty. The institute has good accommodation inside the campus with around eighteen residential halls spread over the campus.

The institute offers excellent research facilities, which can be judged by the presence of nine advanced state of the art research labs in the campus. The fee structure is determined by the government of India and various scholarships are offered to eligible students. The eligibility of admission to the institute is determined by the JEE and Gate exams. Te institute offers hands on training and placements. Students from the institute are much sought after by the well known companies and industries of India.
