OVERVIEW – Mac OS X Leopard is the latest released operating system by Apple’s Mac. This version of Mac was released on 26th October 2007. There are two version of this Mac OS X Leopard. The first one is for the personal computers. The second is designed specially for the servers. This operating system is of closed source type of along with the components of open source. The kernel type used in this operating system is the hybrid kernel. Apple very well advertised this version of the MAC operating system.
FEATURES:
(1) Back to My Mack: Through this feature the MAC users can access the documents on their Personal computer via the Internet whilst they are away from the home.
(2) Boot camp: It helps to install the Windows Vista or Windows XP to a different partition on the Macs that are Intel-based.
(3) Dashboard enhancements: A characteristic that permits the users to twist a portion of any web-page that is displayed in Safari into the ‘Dashboard widget’, and the Dashcode is there to assist the developers.
(4) Good-looking Desktop: The desktop seems fantastic because of the 3-D effects.
(5) Dictionary: This feature is very much important in this version of MAC. You can access the WIKIPEDIA dictionary through this version of MAC. There is another dictionary included with this version of MAC from which you can have the knowledge about the different terminologies regarding APPLE. The Japanese dictionaries including Daijisen are included in this version of Mac.
(6) iCal: This is an interesting feature in this version of MAC. This is calender cum reminder and it also syncs the event requests from the Mail.
(7) Front Row: This is built carefully for the interface of the Apple TV.
(8) iChat: This feature is improved a lot from the past versions of MAC. Not only the improvements, lots of features are added to iChat including some of the plug-ins.
(9) Network file sharing: This feature improved a lot too. In this version of Mac the individual folder sharing is possible too.
(10) Parental Controls: The parental restrictions could be done through the remote set-up.
(11) Others: Among the other features photo booth, preview, podcast capture, quick look, safari, spotlight and time machine are the premieres.
SECURITY FACTORS:
(1) Library Randomization: This version of MAC uses the address space layout randomization technique that shuffles the positions of the libraries in the memory. This reduces the chance of the corruption of the data in the libraries.
(2) Application Layer Firewall: two firewall engines are used in this version MAC. The first one is known as the BSD IPFW. In fact this version was used in the earlier adaptations of MAC. The second one is known as the ‘Leopard Application Layer Firewall’.
(3) Others: The other security factors include Sandboxes, Application Signing, and Secure Guest Account.
MINIMUM SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS:
(1) Processor: Intel powered processor or PowerPC G5 or PowerPC G4.
(2) Optical Drive: DVD-ROM drive minimum to install the OS.
(3) RAM: Minimum of 512 MB RAM is required.
(4) Hard Disk: Minimum of 9 GB disk space is required for the installation purpose.
