West Virginia is a famous for its natural beauty – mountains, rivers and forest. You can also take part in many outdoor activities like skiing, whitewater rafting, rock climbing, caving, fishing, hiking, mountain biking, and hunting. Let’s look at the places to visit in West Virginia.
- Come to another era in Charleston, one of the most well preserved city in the United States. Cobblestone streets, magnificent churches, grand mansions and beautiful gardens are a treat to all history buffs. In addition to that there are old plantations and numerous historical museums dedicated to the Civil War and the Old South.
- Also check out fashionable boutiques and taste the Southern cuisine in some of the finest restaurants here.
- Charleston also has beautiful public parks. The Kanawha State Forest is a large public state park with a pool, camping sites, several biking/walking trails and picnic areas.
- Visit Beckley, for the New River Gorge National River, considered being the oldest river in the Western Hemisphere. You can do white-water rafting here. The 63,000 acres park, which follows this river, is ideal for wildlife viewing, camping, fishing, hiking and rock climbing.
- You can also check out the Beckley Exhibition Coal Mine, where visitors are taken on guided tours by retired miners. It also houses a small museum and a tour in it can be very educative and a different experience.
- Visit Wheeling, the site of the last battle of the American Revolution in 1782 and explore the Wheeling Suspension Bridge, considered one of the worlds largest.
- Another fun place to visit is the Kruger Street Toy & Train Museum. Housed in a restored Victorian schoolhouse, this museum has all the toys ever invented.
- Another museum worth mentioning is the West Virginia Independence Hall Museum, which has the Civil War memorabilia.
