Random Access Memory

OVERVIEW – Random access memory or simply RAM is a sort of data storage unit for the computers. Basically, the RAM comes with the sets of Integrated Circuits or IC, which permit to access the accumulated data in any sequence, that is at random. The remark ‘random’ thus submits to the reality that any portion of data can be revisited in a steady time, in spite of of its physical position and if it is connected to the preceding portion of data or not.

This differences with storage systems such as the tapes, the optical discs or the magnetic disks that depend on the physical progression of the recording media or the reading head. In those instruments, the progression takes more extension than the data relocation, and the repossession time differs relying on the physical position of the subsequent piece.

It should be noted that the Random Access Memories or the RAM are the volatile sort of memory. Thanks to the volatile property, the data on the RAM get erased when the electrical power is switched off in general. But non-volatile memory powered RAM are also waiting to rock the IT world.

Different Types of RAM:

(1) Dynamic Random Access Memory: The Dynamic Random Access Memory or simply the DRAM is a sort of RAM, which stores every bit of data in the different capacitor and that’s too within an IC. Since the practical capacitors have a tendency of leaking the charge, the information or the data gets faded if you don’t refresh the charge of the capacitor. The DRAM has the great advantage of the structural simplicity with a single capacitor and single transistor. This is a traditional volatile memory kind of RAM. You can find lots of different kinds of DRAM in the market in these days.

(2) Static Random Access Memory: Static random access memory or simply the SRAM is a sort of semiconductor-powered memory, in which the information or the data don’t need to be refreshed periodically unlike DRAM. A special circuit design called the ‘bi-stable latching’ is used in the SRAM. Now it should be noted that these SRAM are also the conventional volatile memory type of RAM.

The RAM Disks:

There are some Softwares can that can create the partition on a RAM of the computer, permitting it to perform as a much quicker ‘hard drive’, which is called the ‘RAM disk’. But this RAM disks hold the general property of RAM that is the data in the RAM disks will be erased if the power is switched off.

Upcoming Types of RAM:

(1) Z-RAM: Z-RAM or the zero capacitor RAM is all set to rock the world of RAM. This RAM is manufactured by Innovative Silicon Inc. The Z-RAM presents performance alike of the general SRAM cell with six-transistor but through a single transistor. So that you can enjoy the facilities of higher density provided by these Z-RAM.

(2) TTRAM: TTRAM or the twin transistor RAM provides the performance alive of a conventional DRAM but through Silicon On Insulator manufacturing process. This TTRAM is manufactured by RENESAS.
