Self esteem can be defined as a set of emotions or beliefs that we have for ourselves. In psychology self esteem is defined as a person’s self assessment of his/her own worth. A person’s behavior’s reflect his/ her self esteem such as confidence, boldness etc. Most of the psychologists say that self esteem is an enduring trait of a person’s personality. Precedent of self esteem begins very early in life. For instance when a child reaches a land mark he/ she feels a kind of achievement that boost self esteem.. The notion of triumph along with persistence begins early.
A child always tries first, fails, then tries and finally succeeds; through this he/ she is building ideas regarding his/her own abilities. Simultaneously that child is developing based on dealing with other people. Involvement of parents in building an accurate and healthy self worth of a child is a key ingredient. Another definition for self esteem is a mixture of feelings of abilities with those feelings of being appreciated or loved. A child who is very happy with his/her achievement but does not get any appreciation will certainly experience a feeling of low self esteem. Similarly, child who is being loved but is not confident about his/her own capabilities will also finish up with low self esteem. Healthy self esteem is attained when right balance is maintained.
As parents play a very important role in developing and maintaining a child self-perception. So here are some tips, which can help parents in building the self esteem of their child:
1. Always try to respect your child. A child who does not feel secure or is being abused every time at home always faces the problem of low self esteem. In fact there are many things which make a child depressed like fight of parents or their arguments so try to make good environment at home which will help a child in making his/her self esteem better.
2. If you are quite pessimist or unrealistic about your own capabilities your child will eventually imitate you. Rise up your own self esteem and your child will have a great role model who will always be there to guide him/her and with whom he/ she will not feel uncomfortable.
Therefore, self esteem in children is very important as it a factor that helps him to grow as a better human being and archive his goals in life.
