What is allergy? Allergy is a condition where the body reacts to certain condition or things and the immune system of the body starts working to protect the body against the harmful effect of the element, which it treats as an enemy of the body. In the same way there are many food items, which are considered to have allergen in it.
As soon as this food item is eaten the immune system starts working. The allergic effect can be mild or it can be so severe that it may prove to be fatal. You will be surprised to know that adults hardly suffer from food allergy. It is mostly the children who suffer from this problem.
The allergic effect can be seen within a short period after the person eats the food, which contains allergens. Which are the food items that contain allergens? The common food items which contain allergens are milk, milk products, eggs, nuts and other food items like meat, fish etc. Does that mean that these food items cause allergic reaction in everybody?
No, these allergens only affect those people whose digestive system have some problem in digesting the protein present in these food items so the immune system treats it as an enemy and starts fighting against it which causes allergy. Are there any symptoms of food allergy? Yes, there are symptoms of food allergy.
Symptoms of Food Allergy:
What are the common symptoms of food allergy? The common symptoms of food allergy are, itching in the mouth, throat and the tongue, which causes swelling in the mouth and throat. The other symptoms are itching in the other parts of the body due to which the skin turns red and rashes appear on the skin.
The patient may also develop other symptoms like vomiting, diarrhea, running nose, coughing, breathing problem, itching in the eyes which makes it red and sore. These symptoms may start immediately or develop after a short duration.
In serious condition the person may develop symptoms like low blood pressure, dizziness, severe swelling, unconsciousness and difficulty in breathing. These conditions sometimes prove to be fatal and may lead to death so immediate medical treatment should be provided. But remember one thing.
What is it? It is the most important thing and that is you have to first find out whether it is food allergy or food poisoning or food intolerance because very often confusion is created due to the similarity in the symptoms. So it is better to consult a doctor who is an allergy specialist and determine the actual reason of the symptoms and get the proper treatment.
