Thanksgiving Day – How to Cook Turkey

Probably it is safe to say that one-way or another you have bungled cooking a turkey one Thanksgiving Day. Do not worry. You are not alone with this experience. How to cook turkey, especially for Thanksgiving Day, is usually the most difficult if not mysterious culinary concerns that people have ever experienced.

There are a thousand ways how not to cook turkey. And it seems these are the ways people are cooking it that they end up with dried, unsatisfactory turkey.

It should be understood that there are some basic rules in cooking turkey. First in line is the thawing procedure. Do not ever thaw your turkey straight from the freezer by using tap water or microwave oven. This only makes the turkey lose its flavor and possibility for a juicy result out of the oven.


The proper way to thaw it is by using the refrigerator. This procedure is almost similar to most frozen meat or fish. To retain that freshness of turkey, let the refrigerator do the trick for you in thawing it. Here is a list of how the length of time on how to thaw it:

8 to 12 lbs. – 2 to 3 Days
13 to 16 lbs. – 3 to 4 Days
17 to 20 lbs. – 4 to 5 Days
21 to 24 lbs. – 5 to 6 Days

Before putting the turkey inside the oven, it is better to put salt and pepper on the skin to make it crispy. Then pre-heat the oven by 475°F. If you are pondering stuffing the turkey, it is better to prepare it separately. Cook the turkey for 20 minutes then lower the heat to 250°F for twenty minutes for each ten pounds. The secret of this procedure is to cook the turkey moderately so that the freshness and juice of the turkey is kept. This prevents the turkey from being dry after you get it out of the oven.
