InGaAs, or indium gallium arsenide, is an alloy of gallium arsenide and indium arsenide. This alloy comprises semiconductors properties. Photodiodes arrays made from InGaAs are sensitive to a wide spectral range of wavelengths and are available as image sensors, linear or area arrays, and photodiode or amplifier combination devices.

InGaAs photodiode arrays are widely used in the development of a proprietary CMOS active-pixel readout integrated circuit. Linear arrays with rectangular pixels are commonly used in spectroscopy, which is the interaction between matter and electromagnetic radiation. These linear arrays are used in OEM applications, while complete cameras are also available with this sensor. Uncooled versions of InGaAs photodiodes arrays are available in 1- and 2-stage cooling. The original instruments were initially limited by optical response of silicon in the 250- to 1100-nm wavelength band. In a modern diode-array spectrograph, all the diodes are exposed simultaneously and the measured spectrum is stored on an array of sample-and-hold circuits, which allows the next spectrum to be recorded while the previous one is read out. The time required to record a complete spectrum is simply the time required for a single measurement with the desired SNR. This increased the demand for diode-arrays, which in turn is boosting growth of the InGaAs photodiode and arrays market.

These very-low-light-level applications of these arrays require a minutes-long integration time such as astronomy or Raman spectroscopy, as opposed to hours taken for single-wavelength techniques. This in turn, increases the growth of the InGaAs photodiode and arrays market.
