What to wear during Umrah?

As Umrah is an Ibadah, there are certain rules and regulations that one must abide by for it. In this regard, not only the pilgrims must opt for a specific set of rituals to be carried out but also the clothing worn is different, specific, and compulsory. However, once the holy rituals of Umrah are carried out, a pilgrim can wear its ordinary clothes i.e. after getting out of the state of Ihram.

For Umrah Rituals.

The clothing worn for carrying out the rituals of Umrah is known as ‘Ihram’. Though it’s a complete state that a pilgrim undertakes prior to the performance of umrah, but the clothing is also generally referred to as Ihram.

Ihram for Men.

For men, Ihram consists of two simple pieces/sheets of white cloths. The one used to cover the body from waist down is known as Izar while the one used for covering the upper body like a shawl is known as Rida.

Ihram for Women.

For women, Ihram is their ordinary clothes. In simple words, women can wear their ordinary clothes as their Ihram but it should be in a modest, simple manner under the teachings of Islam. For this reason, many women prefer wearing an Abaya on top of their ordinary clothes.

Prohibitions of Ihram.

A pilgrim must assume the state of Ihram before crossing the boundary of Meeqat. He/she should purify itself first and then wear the designated clothes for Umrah. After this, Niyyah should be intended for performing the Umrah rituals.

After you’ve performed Umrah.

Once all of the rituals of Umrah are performed, a pilgrim must get the Halq/Taqsir done and then come out of the state of Ihram.

When in the state of Ihram, a pilgrim is forbidden to;

  1. Cut, pluck, or shave any sort of body hair.
  2. Clip finger or toe nails.
  3. Wear makeup or fragrance of any sort.
  4. Have intimate relations with spouse.
  5. Get married.
  6. Wear clothes other than these specified for Ihram.
  7. Kill/hunt any insects/animals.

Footwear.

Since you’ll be walking for the most part of your umrah trip, it is advised to wear comfortable footwear. Shoes/sandals that are not only lightweight and airy but also durable and comfy to use. So that you can continue your Umrah rituals without any trouble in walking.

Generally, slip-on shoes are preferred as they liberate you from the hassle of laces as well as minimize tripping hazards.

Some tips for the comfort and Safety of Ihram.

  1. The weather of Saudia Arabia remains hot. Therefore, buy an Ihram of the fabric which is airy yet thick enough that it doesn’t reveal any part of your body.
  2. Wear loose-fitting clothes and of lighter colors.
  3. Stay properly hydrated. If feasible, use oral hydration salts as well.
  4. Involve plenty of fruits, whole grain, and vegetables in your diet.
  5. Be mindful of the health and safety precautions.
